Roger Federer – Lorenzo Sonego
After a worrying first match, Roger Federer has stepped up his game. The Swiss has shown enough since the beginning of the tournament that we can imagine him getting through this round.
Lorenzo Sonego can lure the Swiss into a real trap. He serves well and manages to hold nice rallies while staying behind his line. He is also able to play very fast shots to catch his opponents off guard.
However, Roger Federer has a much more advanced range of shots and is more comfortable on this surface. He should use his technique to his advantage to open up a lot of opportunities on the Italian’s serve (even if a tie-break is totally conceivable here).
In addition, Roger Federer has reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon for the 18th time in his career and has never lost at this level of the competition.
Prediction: Roger Federer
Hubert Hurkacz – Daniil Medvedev
Hubert Hurkacz has been very serious since the beginning of the tournament. Now, let’s be honest, he hasn’t really had an incredible match yet. I imagined Alexander Bublik to be able to compete with him, but the Kazakh played at a very ugly level. He simply gave the match to the Polish (with only 43% of first balls).
The current world number 18 has many weapons on this surface. I’m thinking in particular of his serve (which he hasn’t lost yet in this tournament) and his ability to get his points by himself (especially at the net).
But the key to this match is in the hands of Daniil Medvedev. Indeed, he has everything he needs to beat his opponent of the day. First of all, I think the Russian will be able to oppress the Polish on the backhand side. Hurkacz is much less sharp on the backhand side and should, as usual, abuse his forehand shifts (which will open weaknesses). Then, Medvedev should prevent Hurkacz from getting to the net more than once (which will prevent him from getting as many points as in his last matches).
I would have been even more confident if Daniil Medvedev had not shown signs of weakness against Marin Cilic.
Prediction: Daniil Medvedev
