Rotterdam (2nd round): Hubert Hurkacz – Stefanos Tsitsipas

Latest confrontations

These two players have already met 7 times in official matches. Unsurprisingly, Stefanos Tsitsipas leads with 6 victories.

Hubert Hurkacz’s only victory came in 2019 at Canada’s Masters 1000.

Tournament history

This is the second time Hubert Hurkacz participates in this Dutch tournament, after 2020 when he failed to win his first match.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is playing this ATP 500 for the fourth time in his career. He reaches this second round for the second year in a row and has never been able to go further.

In this edition

In the first round, Hubert Hurkacz won against Adrian Mannarino. A beautiful but difficult victory which was played in two sets (including a tie-break).

Stefanos Tsitsipas won his first match against Egor Gerasimov. Despite the score of two sets to zero (including a tie-break), the Greek was also a little bit disappointed.

Analysis

During his first match, I didn’t find Stefanos Tsitsipas always very serene. Indeed, he was very disturbed by Egor Gerasimov’s powerful balls. I think that if Gerasimov had made fewer faults, then he would have made it much harder for the Greek.

Hubert Hurkacz is also this type of player who has a strike force that could titillate the 6th in the world. We can also add to this his ability to win many free points on his serve (17 aces against Mannarino for example).

What I liked about Stefanos Tsitsipas in his first match was the increase in power that allowed him to play more aggressive tennis. And that’s mainly why Egor Gerasimov made more faults. The man was simply overwhelmed when the Greek accelerated the game.

This should also be a problem for Hubert Hurkacz. The slower than expected surface is in favor of Stefanos Tsitsipas. The rallies are longer and this is not necessarily something the Polish appreciates. The latter has a lot to answer for when the rallies get going, and let’s put his talents as a receiver to good use as well. Nevertheless, he is a rather heavy player who may well be worn down by the intensity that Stefanos Tsitsipas should impose on him.

I must admit that I am quite excited about a victory of Stefanos Tsitsipas. Nevertheless, I prefer to remain cautious as the surface is surprising and we are dealing with a Hubert Hurkacz who is capable of forcing the decision in one or more decisive games.

Prediction: Stefanos Tsitsipas wins

Medium risk
