This will be the third time these two men will compete against each other.
Danil Medvedev won their first match in 2018 in Moscow (indoor hard), while Dusan Lajovic took his revenge the following year in Monte Carlo (clay). It was in the semi-finals of this Masters 1000. The Serb unfortunately lost the final to Fognini.
Daniil Medvedev will play in this Dutch tournament for the fourth year in a row. During his last participation, he was surprised by Vasek Pospisil (defeated in 2 sets, without tie-break). Before that, he had been eliminated in the quarterfinals (2018) and semi-finals (2019).
Dusan Lajovic will play in the Rotterdam ATP 500 for the first time in his career.
I don’t really have any doubts about Daniil Medvedev and his ability to win this match. The Russian should be very motivated as he can take 2nd place in the ATP rankings after this tournament. This will require him to reach the final (which is totally achievable).
I was quite disappointed by Dusan Lajovic’s match in Montpellier. The Serb, who lost to Dennis Novak, did not manage to offer a level of play identical to what he had produced in Australia. A feverish serve and too many faults in the rallies.
Now we can imagine that Dusan Lajovic will play very relaxed as he will have nothing to lose here. And that might well surprise his opponent of the day.
In these indoor conditions, Daniil Medvedev is clearly superior to the 27th in the world. A more solid service, an exemplary regularity in the rallies and explosive attacks. If the current 3rd in the ATP rankings is playing at his level, without taking high Dusan Lajovic, then there is no reason to worry. Besides, a tie-break would be very surprising in this match. But why not, for the suspense?
Prediction: Daniil Medvedev wins
