This will be the third time these two players will compete against each other.
Ugo Humbert won the first two matches, played in 2018 and 2019, losing only one set in the process.
This will be the third time that Norbert Gombos will participate in the final draw of this ATP 250 of Montpellier. He was eliminated once in the 1st round (during his first participation in 2018), and his best performance was a 1/4 final last year. He had managed to beat Carreno Busta then Ruusuvuori, before falling to Gaël Monfils.
For his part, Ugo Humbert is playing in Montpellier for the third year in a row. And, beware, he has never yet managed to win a match (two eliminations in the 1st round … Oops).
It’s a trap match for Ugo Humbert, who will play in a tournament that he has never played in before, and against a player who had good feelings last year.
Norbert Gombos is a serious man who knows how to serve well and how to pull himself out of the rally. However, he is quite irregular and only does a few interesting performances here and there during a season.
We are obviously not safe from an exceptional week on the Slovak side. However, it’s hard not to see a victory for Ugo Humbert when you look at the form of these two players since the beginning of the season. Norbert Gombos lost both of his matches this season, while Ugo Humbert put in a great performance against Nick Kyrgios in the second round of the Australian Open.
Concretely, Ugo Humbert has everything he needs to win against Norbert Gombos. Indeed, he has the psychological advantage over his opponent who has never yet managed to beat him. His serve, which has been rather sharp since the beginning of the season, should also give him more than a breath of fresh air in case of difficulty. Finally, and this is what I like the most about this match, the Frenchman’s offensive state of mind should allow him to neutralize Gombos’ ardor.
Ugo Humbert has often struggled to play loose in this tournament. Being behind closed doors should make it easier for him to spread his wings to (finally) win a match in this city. Caution is called for, but I believe in it.
Prediction: Ugo Humbert wins
