Marbella (2nd round): Jaume Munar – Fabio Fognini

Latest confrontations

These two players have already faced each other twice, again in 2019.

First, at the Australian Open, where Fabio Fognini won after the Spanish player retired in the third set.

Then in Buenos Aires, where Jaume Munar was able to take his revenge in 3 sets and more than 2h20 of play.

Tournament history

This is the first edition of this ATP 250 in Marbella. Until now, it was a Challenger tournament.

In this edition

In the 1st round, Jaume Munar defeated Henri Laaksonen in 2 sets and 1h20 of play.

As for Fabio Fognini, he took advantage of his ranking to pass the first round.

Jaume Munar seems to me to be the favorite in this match. It must be said that he is a real earth player who has only played on clay since the beginning of the season. Moreover, he is currently playing in his country and has already had the opportunity to play 6 matches in Marbella. And yes, the man played the Challenger last week and reached the final (lost in 3 sets to Mager).

All this to say that Jaume Munar is on an interesting dynamic and that could allow him to be in good conditions to face the unpredictable Fabio Fognini.

The Italian loves clay, but has not been able to perform well on this surface for the past two seasons. In fact, he has been eliminated at the beginning of the last 6 ATP 250 tournaments he has played. You have to go back to Bastad in 2018 to see him win a match in this category of tournament (he didn’t do it for nothing as he then lifted the trophy).

In this match, we are dealing with two players who know how to handle rallies from the baseline. On paper, Fabio Fognini has what it takes to win against this opponent. Able to be consistent and attack with both forehand and backhand, the angry Italian could be successful more than once in getting his points by himself.

However, I don’t see Fabio Fognini being 100% in this match, or putting in all the effort he should. First of all, because these last matches are not going in that direction. Secondly, because he is in a “small” tournament and has to play the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 next week. So it’s not in his interest to crack here.

On the other hand, the tennis qualities of Jaume Munar should also be highlighted. He is able to return many balls, but at the moment he has a good feeling for the forehand. This is a very important weapon that allows him to win many matches.

I’m wary of Fabio Fognini in this match. I think he can win if he gets his fingers out of his butt. I just don’t see him at his best, unlike Jaume Munar, who has been making good impressions for a few matches now.

Prediction: Jaume Munar wins
