Mallorca (1/4 final): Feliciano Lopez – Adrian Mannarino

Latest confrontations

Feliciano Lopez and Adrian Mannarino have already faced each other 4 times in 2009 and 2017. The Spanish won the first 3 matches (including the last one by retirement), while Adrian Mannarino won the last (and only) match on grass by retirement as well.

Tournament history

This is the first time that there is an ATP tournament on grass in Mallorca.

In this edition

To get there, Feliciano Lopez defeated Nicola Kuhn in 2 sets and then Karen Khachanov in 3 sets.

Adrian Mannarino defeated Jan-Lennard Struff in the first round in two sets. In the second round, the Frenchman took advantage of Dominic Thiem’s withdrawal (wrist injury) when he was down 5-2 in the first set.

Here are two players who are comfortable on grass. Feliciano Lopez will have the advantage of playing at home and has a slightly more efficient serve than Adrian Mannarino (at least, he wins a few more free points than the Frenchman).

On the other hand, Feliciano Lopez is still struggling to get more than 60% of his first balls through and this is engaging the rallies more than once in his games. This bodes well for Adrian Mannarino who is more comfortable in this area.

That’s why the Frenchman will be my favorite to come away with the victory, even if I expect a tough match.

Feliciano Lopez doesn’t have the legs of a 20 year old anymore and it shows even if he still performs well. Adrian Mannarino is a hard-hitting player who could succeed in pushing the Spanish player to the limit. The interesting thing about the Frenchman is that he doesn’t make as many faults as he should. He is able to stay consistent in rallies and that could end up oppressing Lopez.

Also, Adrian Mannarino knows how to find nice areas and keep his opponents mobile. Feliciano Lopez can quickly go off the rails when he has to chase down the ball and hits it on the end.

This is still a risky prediction as we could see at least one tie-break where these two men will have their chances.

Prediction: Adrian Mannarino
