Cristian Garin and Dominik Koepfer play in the main draw of this Masters 1000 in Madrid for the first time in their careers.

In this edition

In the first round, Cristian Garin won in two sets against Fernando Verdasco.

As for Dominik Koepfer, he beat Reilly Opelka (2-0).

It is difficult to evaluate the first match of these two men in this tournament. Cristian Garin took advantage of Verdasco’s many faults (32 unforced errors). While Dominik Koepfer faced an injured Reilly Opelka (who screwed up a lot).

Cristian Garin seems to me to be the logical favorite to leave with the victory. However, I am very cautious in this prediction, because the Chilean leaves me hungry for several matches now, while Dominik Koepfer has phases where I find him more solid.

What bothers me about Garin is that he is sometimes too passive and makes unusual mistakes. It’s as if, at times, he’s not in his match. On the other hand, we have a German who is not the most consistent player on the circuit, but who is able to drop some pretty direct shots that could push the Chilean into a corner (by taking advantage of the fast balls related to the playing conditions).

So we’re dealing with two very mobile players, and that tells me we could be looking at a disjointed match.

Despite my doubts about Cristian Garin’s ability to raise his game, he remains in a better position to make it through this round. He does have a better defense, and he knows how to be closer to his line.

Dominik Koepfer can also return a lot of balls. However, he can have a bad habit of backing up a lot and that could allow Cristian Garin to keep control of the rallies. The Chilean has that ability to change the direction of the ball quickly (and his long backhand could hurt a lot). I expect that to win him some valuable points.

I don’t see Cristian Garin going far in this tournament. But he has the qualities required to get his ticket to the 1/8 finals. It’s up to him to play.

Prediction: Cristian Garin wins

High risk
