Halle (1/4 final): Philipp Kohlschreiber – Andrey Rublev

Latest confrontations

These two players have already faced each other once. It was in Hamburg (clay court) in 2017 and Philipp Kohlschreiber won in two short sets.

Tournament history

This is the sixteenth time Philipp Kohlschreiber has participated in this ATP 500 in Halle and the eleventh time he has reached the quarter finals. He has already managed to pass this level of competition 6 times and even lifted the trophy once (in 2011).

On his side, Andrey Rublev plays in this German event for the second time in his career. In his first participation, in 2017, he was stopped in 1/4 finals.

To get to this point, Philipp Kohlschreiber defeated Jurij Rodionov and Corentin Moutet. The German has yet to lose a set this week.

Andrey Rublev defeated Karen Khachanov and Jordan Thompson. Like his opponent of the day, he hasn’t dropped a set yet.

Philipp Kohlschreiber is making a remarkable comeback, having started his 2021 season only in April. He reached the 3rd round of Roland Garros and is in the 1/4 finals of this tournament in La Halle with a rather sexy level of play. The German is going for a lot of winners and he doesn’t make as many faults as that. Against Moutet for example, he made only 11 unforced errors for 22 winners (and 5 aces).

One could almost think that Philipp Kohlschreiber, who is not expected to be the favorite, could succeed in annoying Andrey Rublev. In any case, if he plays the same way as in his last matches, then it could be more than just an imagination.

But Philipp Kohlschreiber might not have as much time to play his tennis. Andrey Rublev has the particularity to drop very aggressive shots whenever he has the chance. And by “aggressive shots”, I mean powerful shots that come back quickly to the opponent’s side. The German could be regularly on the defensive and oppressed by these Russian aggressions.

Andrey Rublev’s style of play is not without risk. His initiative can lead to many direct faults. This is a real point of attention in this game.

Prediction: Andrey Rublev

Medium risk
