This will be the second time that these two players will compete against each other.
Hugo Dellien won the first match. It was one year ago in Santiago (in 3 sets).
Hugo Dellien will participate in this ATP 250 for the third time in his career. He has never yet managed to win a match (2 defeats in the first round in 2019 and 2020).
For his part, Marco Cecchinato will also play in Cordoba for the third year in a row. Like his opponent of the day, he has not yet managed to win a match in the final draw of this Argentinean tournament.
Hugo Dellien is not coming out of an incredible 2020 season. And he seems to be surfing on the same wave for this 2021 season. To tell the truth, we are far from the player who was in the top 100 in 2019.
For his part, Marco Cecchinato’s last matches are not exceptional. But it was on hard, and this is not his favorite surface. Before that, the Italian found (a little) of his excellent tennis on the previous clay court tournaments where he was engaged.
Marco Cecchinato seems to me the best placed to start again with the victory. There was nothing crazy about Hugo Dellien’s previous opponents and yet the Bolivian didn’t show much.
Tennistically speaking, Hugo Dellien is not an incredible server and this could allow Marco Cecchinato to engage more than once the rally. What I also like is the panel that the Italian has. He doesn’t just deal from his baseline (even though he has everything he needs for both forehand and backhand). He also knows how to draw his opponents to the net and even finish the points there.
Hugo Dellien mainly uses his forehand to dominate his opponents from his baseline (and that can be nice to see). Marco Cecchinato knows this and should vary as much as possible, while exploiting his opponent’s weaker backhand.
I’m pretty excited about a victory for Marco Cecchinato here. However, there’s something fishy going on here. Hugo Dellien is on his continent and could well take advantage of the 3 matches he has already played on this surface this season not to let the Italian take his marks. In addition to this, the Bolivian has some significant qualities in return for service. This allows him to be very aggressive on the second balls of his opponents (and the current 82nd in the world is far from being strong at this level).
So it could be a trap match for Marco Cecchinato. Be careful.
Prediction: Marco Cecchinato wins
