This will be a first between these two players.
This will be the first time that Dominik Koepfer participates in the final draw of this tournament in Cordoba.
For his part, Federico Coria will play it for the second year in a row. He had fallen at the beginning last year against Andrej Martin (in 2 sets including a tie-break).
Federico Coria is the younger brother of Guillermo Coria (former world number 3 in 2004). He has often been in the shadow of his older brother, but we have been seeing him regularly in the main ATP tournaments for some time now.
The Argentinian, who will have the advantage of playing at home, will face an opponent far from his preferred surface (double advantage of the shot?). Dominik Koepfer is indeed rather a fan of fast surfaces. Nevertheless, let’s take some tweezers with that. Especially after seeing what he achieved at the end of last year at the Masters 1000 in Rome (coming out of the qualifications and victories over De Minaur, Monfils, and Musetti, before taking a set from Novak Djokovic).
What is interesting with Dominik Koepfer is his backhand, which is capable of piercing more than one defense. He makes few mistakes on this side and it allows him to speed up the game.
Unfortunately, the German also has a few flaws that Federico Coria may be able to exploit. First of all at the service where he doesn’t earn many free points (which is even more the case on this slow surface). In addition, he will have to deal with a good receiver, who might be able to put him in trouble in one go.
What I like about Federico Coria is his ability to serve many first balls (he often flirts with the 70%) and release an excellent forehand. The latter could make the difference as he should be able to compete with his opponent’s backhand (which is left-handed) but also take control of the operation on many occasions.
Federico Coria also knows how to hit the ball close to the net to waste his opponents’ time. On the other hand, Dominic Koepfer can play the ball far from the net in forehand and this could be detrimental to him in this match.
Finally, and this is an important element, Federico Coria is quite stable mentally. He knows what he wants and doesn’t give up that easily. Playing in his country should also allow him to find some kind of transcendence.
This should not be an easy match for Federico Coria. But he has all the weapons to defeat Dominik Koepfer on this surface.
Prediction: Federico Coria wins
