These two players have already met once in an official match. It was in Casablanca (clay court) in 2013, and Dominic Thiem won 6-2 6-1.
It is also worth noting that they competed last June at the Adria Tour (exhibition) on clay courts. The Austrian also won that match.
So this will be a first between these two tough guys.
Filip Krajinovic has only played this tournament in Cincinnati once before. That was in 2018, and he was knocked out by Robin Haase.
Dominic Thiem, on his side, will play this Masters 1000 for the 4th time. He hadn’t participated since 2017, and his best performance is a 1/4 final (2016, 2017).
In this edition
Unlike Dominic Thiem, Filip Krajinovic went through the “1st round” box. The Serb won against the qualified Salvatore Caruso, in 2 sets and more than 2 hours of play.
Dominic Thiem seems really on top here.
Filip Krajinovic’s qualities are not insignificant, with a good first ball and good management of the baseline. But despite his victory over Salvatore Caruso in the first round, I didn’t find him very reassuring. He struggled on his service games with no less than 16 break balls conceded and only 41% of points on his seconds. In the rallies, his opponent made a lot of faults (and double faults!). This should not be the case for Dominic Thiem.
Filip Krajinovic is a regular player in the rallies, but I expect Dominic Thiem to put him in trouble more easily. The power and aggressiveness of the world’s No.3 could put the Serb out of breath. The Austrian should also be able to exploit the weaknesses of his opponent’s second ball.
Finally, I have only one question for this match: in what form will Dominic Thiem present himself? The matches he’s played since June have shown he’s not so bad. Let’s see if that’s confirmed for this return.
Prediction: Dominic Thiem wins
