Cincinnati (1st round): Tennys Sandgren – Lorenzo Sonego

Latest confrontations

This will be the first time these two players will play against each other.

Tournament history

You should know this tournament isn’t being played in Cincinnati. It’s being played in Flushing Meadows. The playing conditions are therefore quite different from previous years.

This will be Tennys Sandgren’s first time competing in this Masters 1000.

For his part, Lorenzo Sonego has already participated once. That was last year and he was eliminated in the first round by Nick Kyrgios.

It’s hard not to see a Tennys Sandgren win here. Indeed, the American is playing in his country (good for morale!) and faces a clay court player who hasn’t won a hard match since September 17, 2019. Lorenzo Sonego has now lost nine games in a row on this surface. Not forgetting that the Italian’s first half of the season is really not extraordinary.

Tennys Sandgren, this athletic player, will be able to take advantage of his opponent’s weaknesses in return to keep his serve safe. It should also be noted that Tennys has offensive tennis (I promise, I don’t make that pun anymore) that should hurt Lorenzo Sonego. The latter is not really comfortable when the ball comes back too fast. The Italian is able to defend well but doesn’t often manage to reverse the trend. So, if the American manages to avoid the waste, he could manage to score many points in the rally. And that’s good.

Finally, if I had to look for the little beast (and I do), there’s only one thing that scares me: Lorenzo Sonego and his last 10 consecutive exhibition wins. His opponents were far from his level, but that’s the kind of thing that can give a player wings.

Looking at the participants of the first round, Tennys Sandgren had a rather nice draw. It’s up to him to take advantage of it.

Prediction: Tennys Sandgren wins

Medium risk
