Dubaï (Round 1) : Gaël Monfils – Marton Fucsovics

Last confrontation

These two guys have crossed paths once before. It was last May in Madrid, and Gaël Monfils won in 3 sets. We remember that he had taken a 6-1 before the match.

Tournament history

Gaël Monfils will play this ATP 500 Dubai for the fourth time. In 2019, he reached the semi-finals and has never yet managed to go further. It should also be noted that he has only been eliminated once in the first round : during his first participation in 2008 (by Berdych, now retired).

Marton Fucsovics discovered this tournament during the previous edition. He reached the quarter-finals after victories over Dzumhur and Struff. Roger Federer then eliminated him in two sets (including a tiebreak) before lifting the trophy.

Gaël Monfils has everything it takes to beat this opponent. First of all at the restart where the Frenchman should be able to titillate Fucsovics more than once. It must be said that the latter serves as a big first, but is often feverish when he has to serve seconds. Monfils should be able to make him doubt and take advantage of it. Without forgetting that the Frenchman has been showing some very nice things about his commitments for a while.

In the game, the Monf’ proved that he was at the top physically. In this new match, that should allow him to defend well against Fucsovics’ excellent forehand, but also to release some powerful shots that could well set the Hungarian back. The Hungarian, far from being a defensive tennis fan, should commit a little more fouls than usual.

I’m pretty excited about a Gaël Monfils victory here. But I don’t forget that Marton Fucsovics remains a tough opponent, especially on this surface. Nevertheless, the Frenchman should be able to exploit the confidence he has built up over the last few weeks to get over this hurdle, in a tournament he enjoys.

Prediction : Gaël Monfils wins
